According to the lintel stone over the entrance of OLIVEDA's oldest winery, wine production on the estate dates back to 1764, although at that time it was only for family consumption. In 1948, Josep Oliveda Casanovas and his wife, Joana Rigau Ros, founded a company specialising in the production and marketing of wine and cava. In 1995, their wines were awarded two Gold Medals in Madrid, and thus joined the elite group of "The One Hundred Best Wines of Spain".

Originally, the cellar aged cavas made with free-run juice from the traditional varieties: Xarel.lo, Parellada and Macabeo. However, the founders, aware of modern innovations and the new trends from abroad, rose to the challenge of making high-quality cavas with outside varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Ten years ago, the family restructured its vineyards in Vilamaniscle, Garriguella and Capmany, introducing such new grape varieties as Merlot, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon to consolidate and improve on the usual native varieties, Garnacha (Grenache) and Cariñena (Carignan).

OLIVEDA currently produces wine in two Denominations of Origin: “EMPORDÀ” and “CATALUNYA”. It also produces cava under the D.O. “CAVA”.

Since its very beginnings, GRUP OLIVEDA's philosophy has been to produce quality wines and cavas. To achieve this, the company's decision makers, led by ALFONS FREIXA OLIVEDA, have opted to combine the most traditional production methods with modern technology, making strict quality control and research possible.
